What an Interlock® aluminum roof is
An Interlock® roof is made of interlocking aluminum panels, each locked to its neighbors on all four sides with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface. The panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile, or rolled as standing seam.
Made in North America: the panels are manufactured by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. In Idaho they are installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc., the certified and exclusive Interlock® roofing contractor in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, from our office in Boise. Idaho General Contractor Registration (DOPL) #6181938.
Why aluminum, for a roof in Idaho
It can't rust
Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International). There is no steel inside an aluminum panel, so a scratch, a cut edge or a fastener hole has nothing to rust, whether the roof sits under sprinkler overspray, snowmelt or a valley inversion.
It's light
Aluminum is about one-third the density of steel (ASM International). Interlock panels weigh about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed, depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790), a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate.
Freeze–thaw has nothing to split
Valley winters bring freezing nights and sunny afternoons, over and over. Water that soaks into wood shakes or works under asphalt tabs freezes and expands; aluminum absorbs no water and can't rot or split.
Embers have nothing to burn
Aluminum does not ignite, and an Interlock roof is Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly. That matters in Boise's wildland-urban interface areas, where the city's fire code asks for a Class A roof on ignition-resistant construction.
Snow, hail and sun in southwest Idaho
Snow loads in the Treasure Valley are modest and climb fast with elevation. The University of Idaho's 2015 ground snow load study lists 15 psf for Boise, 15 psf for Nampa and 18 psf for Caldwell, and 157 psf for McCall. Your building department sets the design load for your address. Smooth aluminum sheds snow, so we plan snow guards wherever a slide would land on an entry, deck, walkway or driveway.
Hail comes with spring and summer thunderstorms. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products. Hail can still mark a metal roof; the Guardian material warranty covers splitting, cracking and perforation from hailstones 1.5 inches in diameter or less.
Summers are hot, dry and bright. The Alunar® finish reflects much of the sun's near-infrared energy in every color and carries a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty.
The profiles
Five aluminum profiles: Slate (the most popular across the Interlock network), Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam, plus solid copper for bays, porches and accents. Nine colors: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope.
On a Treasure Valley ranch or two-story home, Slate and Cedar Shingle are the usual choices; Shake replaces a tired cedar shake roof without the fire load; Standing Seam suits a modern home or a mountain cabin. If your subdivision has an architectural committee, get its approval of profile and color in writing before you sign; in a historic district, check with the city's historic preservation staff.

How a roof gets done
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Consultation | At your home or over Zoom. We go through profiles and colors and answer questions. |
| 2. Measure and inspect | We measure the roof and check what's on it now. Cedar, concrete tile and natural slate always come off; a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if the inspection finds it suitable and your city allows it. |
| 3. A written price after your roof consultation | Anything the inspection finds goes into the written quote before you sign, not into a change order later. |
| 4. Permit and approvals | We pull the building permit where your city requires one (Boise, Meridian and Nampa do for a re-roof) and supply what your HOA's architectural committee asks for. |
| 5. Installation | Installed by our own company to the manufacturer's specification, with flashing, ventilation and snow guards as planned. |

Questions, answered
Who installs aluminum roofing in Idaho?
Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc., the certified and exclusive Interlock® roofing contractor in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, from our office in Boise. Idaho General Contractor Registration (DOPL) #6181938. In business since 1997. Call (208) 842-4762.
Is aluminum roofing good for the Idaho climate?
Aluminum doesn't rust, absorbs no water and can't rot, so freeze–thaw cycles have nothing to split, and its smooth surface sheds snow. It does not ignite, which matters for wildfire embers. Ice dams are a different matter: they come from heat loss into the attic and from ventilation, no roof stops them on its own, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty.
Does aluminum roofing hold up to hail?
Four Interlock profiles, Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile, carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products. Large hail can still dent aluminum. The Guardian material warranty covers splitting, cracking and perforation from hailstones 1.5 inches in diameter or less; cosmetic dents are not covered.
Is an aluminum roof better than a steel roof?
Both are metal roofs, but steel depends on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, and aluminum has no steel to rust. Aluminum is also about a third the weight. Steel roofing usually costs less up front, and thicker steel resists denting better. Our steel vs aluminum guide sets out the differences.
How much does an aluminum roof cost in Idaho?
It depends on the roof's area, pitch and complexity, what comes off, the profile and options such as the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly. Prices vary job to job, and an in-home roof consultation is required for accurate pricing. You get a written price after your roof consultation, which is free.
Can an aluminum roof go over my asphalt shingles?
Sometimes: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first. Nampa's reroof permit allows no more than two layers at completion; other cities have their own rules, so we check at the estimate.
Do I need a permit for an aluminum roof in Boise?
Yes. The City of Boise lists re-roofing an existing structure as work that needs a building permit. Meridian and Nampa also require a permit for a roof replacement. We pull the permit as part of the job.
How long does an aluminum roof last?
Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years. That is a property of the metal, not a promise; what is in writing is the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and the 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty, and our 10 Year Limited Labor Warranty covers the installation.
