Choosing a metal roofing contractor in Idaho
Start with the Idaho DOPL registration: Idaho requires contractors to register for jobs over $2,000 and to show the number on contracts. Then ask who installs the roof, what the metal and its impact rating are, who stands behind the warranties, and whether the contractor pulls the permit.

Start with the Idaho registration
Idaho requires anyone who takes on a construction job of more than $2,000 to register as a contractor with the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). Idaho registers contractors; it does not license roofers separately. To register, a contractor shows proof of workers' compensation insurance and general liability insurance of at least $300,000, and must display the registration number on its contracts and advertising. Before a residential contract over $2,000, the contractor must give the homeowner a written disclosure.
Look the registration up yourself on DOPL's public license search before you sign, and check that the name on the registration matches the name on the contract. If anything is unclear, DOPL's contractor program answers questions at 208-334-3233.
Then the questions that sort roofers out
- Is the company the manufacturer's certified installer for the system it is quoting, or a reseller?
- Who will be on the roof: the company's own crew or a subcontractor?
- What is the base metal, steel or aluminum, and its thickness? What is the impact rating of the exact profile, and who tested it?
- Is the roof rated as a Class A fire assembly, and what is the assembly (covering, underlayment, deck)?
- Who is the warrantor of the material warranty, does coverage shrink over time, and does it transfer when you sell?
- Is there a written workmanship warranty from the installer, for how long, and how is a claim made?
- Will the contractor pull the building permit? Boise, Meridian and Nampa require one for a re-roof.
- Is the price in writing, including what happens if the deck is soft once the old roof is off?
- Where is the company's Idaho office, and who answers the phone after the job?
Warning signs
No registration number
Idaho requires the contractor's registration number on its contracts and advertising. A missing number is the first question to ask.
Storm chasing
After a hail storm, out-of-area crews knock on doors. Ask where the company's Idaho office is and check the registration before anyone gets on your roof.
Pressure to sign today
A price that is only good if you sign today is a sales tactic. A written price should give you time to read it and compare.
Vague warranties
"Lifetime" or a big number of years means little until you read who the warrantor is, what is excluded and whether coverage reduces over time.

Questions, answered
Does Idaho license roofers?
Idaho does not license roofers separately. Anyone who takes on a construction job of more than $2,000 must register as a contractor with the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL), with proof of workers' compensation and general liability insurance of at least $300,000.
How do I check a contractor's Idaho registration?
Use DOPL's public license search and check that the name and number match the contract. Idaho requires the registration number on contracts and advertising. DOPL's contractor program can be reached at 208-334-3233.
What must a contractor give me before a residential contract in Idaho?
DOPL's contractor FAQ says a contractor must give a written disclosure before entering into a contract over $2,000 with a homeowner or residential purchaser. Ask for it and read it before you sign.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in the Treasure Valley?
Boise lists re-roofing as work that needs a building permit, Meridian lists roof replacement as needing a permit, and Nampa has a reroof permit application for all reroof projects. Other cities set their own rules, so ask your city or your contractor.
