Boise metal roofing

A metal roof in Boise needs a building permit, a Class A roof if the lot is in the city's wildland-urban interface area, and a Certificate of Appropriateness in a historic district. We install Interlock® aluminum roofs from our office at 3295 W Elder St, Suite 209, Boise, and pull the permit as part of the job.

Idaho is a new market for us. You won't find Boise install counts or Boise reviews here until we have them. What this page sets out is what a new roof in Boise involves, and how an Interlock® aluminum roof fits it.

The re-roof permit

The City of Boise lists re-roofing an existing structure as work that needs a building permit, and homeowners can apply online for a roof permit through Planning and Development Services. When we install your roof, we pull the permit as part of the job and build to the code the city enforces.

Idaho's adopted residential code is the 2018 International Residential Code with Idaho amendments (the Idaho Residential Code, 2020 Edition), according to the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses.

Foothills homes and Boise's wildland-urban interface code

Boise has added a Wildland-Urban Interface chapter to its fire code (Boise City Code 5-12-53). The fire code official maps the wildland-urban interface areas and decides which lots are in them: generally the foothills, with valley, desert and other sheltered areas in a second class of construction.

Ignition-resistant construction in those areas calls for a Class A roof assembly or covering, tested to ASTM E108 or UL 790. The rule also reaches existing homes: when the roof covering is replaced, or 50 percent or more of it is replaced within 12 months, the new roof has to meet it.

An Interlock® roof is Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 15/32-inch plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite, and there are no shake grooves or granules for embers to settle into. Idaho's Ready, Set, Go! guide calls the roof the most vulnerable part of a home because windblown embers lodge there.

Historic districts

Boise has ten designated historic districts. The city's Historic Preservation staff say exterior work there, including demolition of any part of a building such as the roof, needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit can be issued. If your home is in a district, call Historic Preservation (208-608-7100) before you choose a profile and color; we bring samples and product documents to that conversation.

Boise weather and your roof

Snow load

The University of Idaho's 2015 ground snow load study lists 15 psf for Boise at 2,681 ft. Aluminum panels weigh about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed (ICC-ES ESR-1790), and smooth aluminum sheds snow, so we plan snow guards over entries, decks and driveways.

Hail

Spring and summer thunderstorms bring hail to the valley: on June 26, 2026 a storm left several inches of small hail on the ground in northwest Meridian. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products.

Freeze–thaw

Freezing nights and sunny afternoons split wood shakes and work water under asphalt tabs. Aluminum absorbs no water and can't rot, and interlocked panels have no tabs to lift.

Summer heat

Hot, dry summers age asphalt. The Alunar® finish reflects much of the sun's near-infrared energy in every color and carries a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty.

Boise homes we quote

North End and East End older homes, foothills homes, ranch homes across the Bench, two-story homes in southeast and west Boise subdivisions, townhouses and HOA communities. Slate and Cedar Shingle are the usual choices on a traditional home; Shake replaces a cedar shake roof without the fire load; Standing Seam suits a modern home. Every Interlock profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope. Many Boise subdivisions have CC&Rs and an architectural committee that approves roof material and color: get that approval in writing before you sign.
