Idaho aluminum shingles
Aluminum shingles are stamped aluminum roofing panels that don't rust, because there is no steel inside them. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating in all four shingle profiles (Intertek, for Delta Building Products), are made in North America, and are installed in Idaho from our office in Boise.

What makes an aluminum shingle different
An aluminum shingle is a stamped aluminum panel with a baked finish. Unlike a steel shingle, there is no steel core under the finish, so there is nothing to rust if the finish is scratched or cut. The exposed aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International).
Interlock® aluminum shingles lock to each other on all four sides. The fasteners sit under the course above, out of the weather, so the roof has no exposed screw heads and no rubber washers to dry out in Idaho sun and cold.

Profiles and colors
Four shingle profiles: Slate, the most popular; Cedar Shingle and Shake, which give a wood look without rot, splitting or a fire load; and Mediterranean Tile for Spanish and Italianate homes. Nine colors: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown.
Many Treasure Valley subdivisions have CC&Rs and an architectural committee that approves roof material and color. We bring samples and spec sheets, and you get the committee's approval in writing before you sign.
Aluminum shingles in Idaho weather
Hail
Spring and summer thunderstorms bring hail to the Treasure Valley: on June 26, 2026 a storm left several inches of small hail on the ground in northwest Meridian. All four shingle profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products. Large hail can still dent aluminum.
Wildfire embers
Idaho's Ready, Set, Go! guide calls the roof the most vulnerable part of a home because embers land and lodge there. Aluminum does not burn, and there are no shake grooves or granules for embers to settle into.
Freeze–thaw
Freezing nights and sunny days split wood and work water under asphalt tabs. The aluminum panel absorbs no water, and interlocked courses leave no tab to lift.
Snow and ice
Aluminum sheds snow; snow guards go where a slide would land on people, decks or cars, planned at the estimate. No roof stops ice dams on its own: they come from heat loss and ventilation, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty.
Questions, answered
What are aluminum shingles?
Aluminum shingles are roofing panels stamped from aluminum sheet and finished with a baked coating, made to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with concealed fasteners.
Do aluminum shingles rust?
No. Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation, and there is no steel inside an aluminum shingle to rust.
Are aluminum shingles good in Idaho hail?
Interlock's four shingle profiles, Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile, carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products. Large hail can still dent aluminum; the Guardian material warranty covers splitting, cracking and perforation from hailstones 1.5 inches in diameter or less, not cosmetic dents.
Are aluminum shingles better than steel shingles?
Aluminum doesn't rust and is about one-third the density of steel. Steel shingles usually cost less up front and depend on their zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting. Thicker steel resists denting better.
How thick are Interlock aluminum shingles?
The Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles are 0.019-inch base-metal aluminum; Shake and Tile are 0.0276 inch, according to ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1790. The alloy meets ASTM B209.
How much do aluminum shingles weigh?
About 0.41 lb per square foot installed for the Slate and Cedar Shingle profiles, and about 0.58 to 0.59 lb for Shake and Tile (ICC-ES ESR-1790). Natural slate and concrete tile weigh many times that.
Where can I get aluminum shingles installed in Idaho?
Interlock Metal Roofing (PNW) Inc. installs Interlock® aluminum shingles from our office in Boise, serving Boise and the Treasure Valley first; elsewhere in Idaho, ask us. Idaho General Contractor Registration (DOPL) #6181938. Call (208) 842-4762.
Can aluminum shingles be installed over asphalt?
A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable and your city allows it. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first.
